Changes to GAR

21 September 2014

GAR completed an upgrade of some of the application coding that runs the site and also made a few changes to the content presentation in order to speed things up for some of the more complex rulemaking areas. We have also added some additional options for registered users.

GAR is based upon a fairly complex set of databases that interact with one another to render each page “on the fly”. What this means is that each time you click to look at a rule or meeting, the site gathers all the required information from across the databases. For some regulations, in particular, this can mean drawing a list of several hundred documents from the database. With more than 8000 documents, this process was causing some pages to load slowly.

Since casual users likely do not need so much information, the new system only calls for the more recent documents posted within the last nine months or so. For registered users who presumably may need the greater level of detail, a link is provided to reload each page with the complete set of documentation from the database.

For registered users, we have also added the choice between various document formats when available. Regulatory texts and document submissions are often available in both pdf and other formats such as document, spreadsheet, or slide presentation. Where this is the case, we are now adding links to the alternative formats, indicated by icons next to the document titles.

Hopefully, these changes will improve the usefulness of GlobalAutoRegs to you. As always, we are happy to hear comments and suggestions from our users.
